This an archive of my elective summary that spawned Up Your Jumper!
Welcome! How’s it rocking? My name is Tim Denshire-Key, I’m currently studying Industrial Design at RMIT.
This semester I am embarking upon a sustainable study tour of Australia. The grand plan is to travel around, looking at projects relating to sustainable design and living, renewable energy and water. So a bit of everything, thus the name Up Your Jumper. This blog will be a living record of where I’m at and what I’ve been looking into.
From the outset, I don’t pretend to be an expert of any sort in the areas I’m looking into. I hope from this journey, to get more of an idea about what all this ‘sustainability’ guff is. Also I want to get a snapshot of what is already happening right here and now, in Australia. By creating this blog, I’m hoping it will allow people from all cracks of life to be able to get an insight also.
I see us living in a time of change. The climate is changing. The economy is changing. Our society is changing. Or maybe I’m reaching the age where I’m beginning to see possibilities to make changes. The focus at the moment seems largely on the negative. On the problems. I see though, that this is an opportunity for change. We have the chance now to make positive changes within our society.
This time of upheaval I believe should be seen as an opportunity to make changes to our society to lessen our impact upon the environment around us, while improving our quality of life. This quality of life needs not just to be measured in simply material assets. I feel that while we have materially become more comfortable, we have become more isolated from one another. It seems the more we have, the less we need to interact with others. Self sufficiency may not be the key, but more intergrated inter dependence. To reanimate the community circles that once were born from necessity, to bring a richer level to all our lives.
So it should be interesting journey, if you think so too, stay tuned to Up Your Jumper!
Catch ya bout soon, Tim
